Final dental implant series installment
For the past couple of weeks we have discussed implants; the consultation, the placement, and today – caring for the implant. Dental implants are a major investment, and with proper care, can last a lifetime. Personal hygiene must take place before, during, and after placement of the implant. Proper monitoring and maintenance is essential to ensure durability and health of the implant. The goal is to maintain a stable, infection-free, healthy environment. Cleaning around implants differs from natural teeth for two reasons: The first is that each attaches to surrounding bone and gums in different ways; secondly, the materials that the implants are made of is very different from natural teeth. Your hygienist must select instruments for cleaning that will not damage the crown, abutment, or the implant itself. The instruments, called scalers and curettes, are often made of plastics and resins so not to scratch the smooth surface of the abutment and crown. If the surface is scratched it can attract and harbor bacteria. Natural teeth don’t scratch and metal instruments are used to clean them. Hygienists may also use ultrasonic instruments to clean around implants, which have nylon or plastic tips to minimize damage. They clean by using high-frequency vibrations, which may be necessary if large quantities of debris have accumulated. They are used on a low setting with water irrigation, and sometimes antibacterial solutions.
