April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month
I hope over the past couple of weeks you have become more informed about oral cancer. Let’s conclude the series with how it can be prevented.
Regular check-ups at your dental office and self-evaluations are essential. If you are vigilant about your oral health, make note of the condition of your mouth when you brush and floss. Be aware of any bumps, discoloration of tissue (such as white or red areas), or changes to the mouth, throat, tongue, and lips.
- Cancers of the lip are common among people who work outdoors or others with prolonged exposure to sunlight. Wear sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself.
- Be aware of your nutrition! Studies have found a link between diets low in fruits and vegetables and increased oropharynx cancer (cancer of the middle throat).
- Lifestyle: smokers and drinkers are 70-80% more likely to develop oral cancer.
- Vaccinations: HPV (human papilloma virus) is on the rise, especially in our youth. HPV infection is a cause of oral cancer and you should ask your doctor about being vaccinated.
